Opening of New Nursing
Resource Center
We are pleased to announce the opening of the state-of-the-art
new Nursing Resource Center for the College of Nursing. The
Center opened for classes for the fall semester in August. The
Blessing and Dedication of the Center was held on September 28,
2007.
The Center has four large laboratories. The Basics Laboratory is
an 11 bed facility which is used by all courses to teach basic
nursing skills to students. One of the beds is set up to
simulate a patient isolation room. |

The Advanced Laboratory has 2 stations that are simulated as
intensive care unit beds and 2 stations that are simulated emergency
department bays. The Health Assessment laboratory has 7 stations
that are set up with examination tables and looks like a physician’s
office. The Family laboratory has 2 stations that are set up as
obstetrical stations and 2 stations that are set up as pediatric
beds. All beds or stations have computers equipped with IDX CareCast
which allow students to document patient care as they work. They can
also use Internet access to gather information or research for
patient care. Each laboratory has a classroom area with ‘smart
classroom’ technology and seating for 15-20 students.
Simulation manikins were purchased as part of the Simulation Across
the College Program to develop learning activities for students. In
addition to the SimMan which is housed in the critical care area,
the College purchased an infant, child and 7 adult simulators. These
simulators allow the students to practice clinical skills, decision
making, and priority setting in a safe, controlled environment.
Following the simulation activity, there is a scheduled time period
for debriefing and discussion of the simulation activity.
Also included in the Resource Center is a kitchen/vending machine
area for students and a lounge. The building has wireless Internet
access for students.
