Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program
The College of Nursing has designed a predominantly online post masters Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program for the nurse with a masters degree. The program of study is 39 credits and is designed for part time study. The DNP is providing the academic preparation for masters prepared nurses to acquire advanced knowledge biostatistics, cultural competency, epidemiology, and advancements in healthcare. The DNP prepares students for organizational change, healthcare finance, ethics, law and policy.
Throughout the program students complete practices that utilizes the doctoral project, knowledge gained from coursework, and the opportunity for application of research and evidence based practice.
Due to state authorization requirements the College cannot accept applications from residents of the following states: Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, and Wisconsin.
Potential out of state applicants need to contact the Graduate Dean to determine state authorization eligibility regarding distance education.
Program Objectives/Outcomes
The graduate of the doctorate degree program is able to:
- Incorporate advanced levels of clinical judgment and scholarship into nursing and leadership.
- Appraise scientific knowledge, as well as new and current approaches in nursing practice and leadership to promote optimal outcomes.
- Examine leadership in organizations and systems to assure quality care delivery models.
- Design, deliver, direct, and disseminate evidence-based practices.
- Evaluate programs, healthcare delivery systems, and outcomes using information systems.
- Advocate for healthcare practice change through policy development and evaluation.
- Adapt appropriate leadership roles for effective transdisciplinary collaboration to achieve optimal outcomes.
- Combine ethical principles with decision making processes in healthcare practices and systems.
- Integrate advanced clinical reasoning and judgment in the management of complex clinical situations and systems.
Online Classes
The DNP Program is offered online using eCollege software. This allows students to view course materials, check course calendars, and participate in asynchronous discussions. Online classes allow you to interact and collaborate with course faculty and classmates and do coursework from the convenience of your own setting. Courses may require meeting on campus a maximum of four times per semester.
Plan of Study
Upon admission, each student will be assigned an academic advisor. The student is required to meet with the advisor to develop a plan of study to assure that professional and educational goals and needs are met. The plan of study will be reviewed each semester and revised as needed.
