Description of Program
The Neonatal Nursing Practitioner (NNP) program is a 48 credit hour course of study designed to provide the professional nurse with an in-depth focus on health management of the acutely and critically ill neonate and their family through their studies in research, theory, cultural diversity, health policy, ethics and leadership related to the role of the Advanced Practice Nurse.
The NNP program focuses on care of newborns with a variety of conditions requiring individual treatment in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU’s). The graduate student in the NNP option will demonstrate extensive knowledge base and analytical skills to process, integrate new knowledge, and use scientific principles to specific clinical situations. The student will be able to provide anticipatory surveillance and manage predictable events; demonstrate technical procedures; and function with the intraprofessional team. The NNP student will provide care to newborns who require specialized management. This includes: initial resuscitation and stabilization in the delivery room setting; providing ventilatory support and care of other problems associated with prematurity.
Upon successful completion of this program, the graduate will be eligible to sit for national Neonatal Nurse Practitioner certification examination offered by the National Certification Corporation. Following successful certification the graduate applies for licensure as an advanced practice registered nurse.
