Student Organizations

Students interested in opportunities for student leadership and purposeful participation between students may start new student organizations with the primary purpose being common professional, social, political, and religious interest that represents the good of the College community. See the Student Handbooks for the policies and procedures for starting new student groups.

 

Multicultural Student Association

Every student is eligible to become a member of the Multicultural Student Association. The purpose of the association is to provide support and encouragement to minority students in nursing.

Peer Teaching Group

The newly developed Peer Teaching Program is intended to offer another option to students who would benefit from assistance with coursework or clinical skills. Peer Learners, who must be referred to the Peer Teaching Program by course faculty, will be matched with volunteer Peer Teachers according to specific needs. Peer Teaching may include reviewing course content for exams, assisting with clinical paperwork, and practicing clinical skills in the laboratory setting

The Peer Teacher Program provide students with a unique opportunity to learn from a peer, gain teaching experience, to help others, and provides faculty with an additional resource to assist struggling students. Students who are peer teachers benefit from the program through personal satisfaction, the gaining of teaching experience, an increase in their own knowledge, resume building, and by helping other students achieve success.

Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI)

Student Life | Sigma Theta Tau International

STTI is the International Honor Society of Nursing, which recognizes superior achievement and the development of leadership qualities, fosters high professional standards, encourages creative work, and strengthens commitment to the ideals of the profession. The Saint Francis Medical Center College of Nursing Honor Society was chartered as a new chapter of the International Nursing Honor Society Sigma Theta Tau at the biennial convention in November 2005. On March 18, 2006, the newly created chapter, Tau Omicron, was chartered with 136 members. Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), an honor society that promotes leadership and scholarship in nursing practice, education and research, was chartered in 1922 in Indianapolis and consisted of 6 members. The Society has now grown to include 431 chapters located in 14 countries. Invitations are extended to undergraduate and graduate nursing students who meet the initiation criteria. Tau Omicron Chapter, is chartered at the College of Nursing. Sigma Theta Tau International's website is www.nursingsociety.org.

Student Nurses Association

Student Life | NSNA Logo

The Student Nursing Association offers students opportunities for leadership skills, including teamwork, at the local, state or national level. It offers students continuing education about the professional roles in nursing such as advanced practice, political awareness, health care policies and participation in a professional nursing organization.

Students may join the National Student Nurses' Association via the web site www.nsna.org. Officers need to be active members of NSNA, but all students of the College are invited to the chapter meetings. Every student is eligible to become a member of the National Student Nurses Association (NSNA). Meetings and conventions are held on the national, state, and local level.

Student Senate

Students within each program elect representatives to the Student Senate. These representatives participate in the governance of the student body. The Student Senate plans and sponsors social and/or professional activities that are of interest to the students. Students also serve as voting members on specific committees of the College Senate representing student interest in academic decisions.
